Even though we spend a lot of time in the office designing, writing, animating, and editing, our resident foam sculpture artist Brad likes to get out and stretch his legs too. With over 8 years of experience sculpting everything from table centerpieces to full-scale event sets, he’s no stranger to turning a block of foam into something unforgettable. In his latest project, he teams up with Chela’s Latin Cuisine on Congress to craft a huge, sparkling, skull-shaped disco ball that really showcases their high-energy fusion of good food and Tucson nightlife. Before I show you how it turned out though, I want to break down what Brad’s been up to this past week.
Key Points:
- Our resident foam sculpture artist Brad teamed up with Chela’s Latin Cuisine on Congress to create a skull-shaped disco ball for their downtown night-life restaurant.
- Taking less than a week of build time from start to finish, the dazzling center-piece has made it’s debut!
Day 1: It Starts With a Sketch
Like every good idea does, it all started with a sketch! Once it started to take shape, the team affectionately named it Jonesy.

Day 2: A “Rough” Start
Foam may be forgiving, but shaping a perfectly smooth skull was not so easy. “The hardest part was getting a nice round head,” Brad said. There were plenty of pauses, second guesses, and re-shaves, but by the end of the day, Jonesy had a head worth spinning.

Day 3: A Dabble in Dentistry
After the weekend, Brad got to work with a tiny drill to make Jonesy’s teeth perfect. With a fall project also in the works, it seems like Halloween was on his mind, “I wanted to mess the teeth up a little, but it obviously wasn’t the prompt. I felt kinda like a dentist,” he said, laughing.

Day 4: Shine On, You Crazy Diamond
Brad’s final touch was to give this skull a glamorous silver coat. This metallic finish was the perfect foundation for the disco ball effect, catching the light and hinting at the sparkle to come.

Day 5: Chela’s Turn
After just a short time in the office, Jonesy was finally off to their forever home at Chela’s. Their team worked tirelessly for over 20 hours gluing on hundreds of tiny mirror tiles by hand. Their hard work paid off, turning Jonesy into a radiant centerpiece that reflects the pulsing energy of Tucson’s nightlife. This big skull is making it’s debut this weekend at Chela’s THIS WEEKEND, so be sure to check it out!
